Watchlist is a luxury Leviathan offers to its traders to give easy access to trades that a member is interested in. These trades can be built in Leviathan’s Structure Page and save to a Watch List for future 1-click access or to just glance at the current Theo, change in theo since settles, and current delta of the structure.

What is Leviathan’s Watchlist?

Having a viewable Watch List allows a trader to easily view all of your positions or potential trades in one space. Rather than building each strategy every time you wish to view the value, save them in your watch list to see the core values of theo and delta. If you wish to do a deeper dive into one of the strategies saved in the Watch list, simply click on it. The strategy will show up in your Structure Table and you can look at historical charts and heat maps from there. Nice and simple.

Volume is the sheer number of contracts that trade in a given strike during a given time period, usually 1 trading session. However, volume can be viewed over longer time periods to give a trader a broader overview of which strikes are the most active. Volume is a good indicator of where interest lies in a given product. For example, if we see heavy Volume in the 1 month 25 delta Put in XYZ then we can garner some information from that. We know that the market participants are either expecting a good selloff in XYZ or they are giving up on that trade and liquidating that position. The Volume report alone does not tell you which of these is true, but the Open interest report does. If OI increases in said XYZ, 1 month, 25 delta Puts, we know that traders are initiating a new position and putting on new risk. The opposite can be said if OI decreases, they are exiting their position and risk. It is important to follow the direction of these trades to determine whether traders are buying or selling these strikes to get a full picture.

What is Volume/Open Interest?

In a nutshell, Volume tells us which strikes the market participants have interest in trading and OI tells us whether their interest is to add to their position or exit their position. Again, traders need to follow the market closely to gather that last piece of information…direction. Watching the Volume/OI reports closely can help a trader see where option traders are targeting for moves in the underlying, when traders are giving up on said positions, and where the gamma lies. Seeing how the market end users are positioned is very important, but not nearly as important as how the “crowd” is positioned. The market making community is affectionately known as the “crowd”. The crowd is made up of many market makers from a wide variety of firms with very similar risk profiles as they all take pieces of the same customer trades, but they have vastly different risk parameters. Knowing how the crowd is postioned is paramount as the crowd is generally not capitalized in the same way that banks and hedge funds are. In order to keep trading, market makers need to keep their positions hedged to keep margin costs down. This means they need they will inevitably pin their long positions and race through their shorts as they try to hedge their gamma or outright liquidate the option position.

What does Volume / Interest tell us?

Leviathan separates itself by really digging deep on the Open interest part. A trader can not only watch OI changes on a day to day basis. This would drive someone mad and he would need a computer for a mind to remember it all. Wouldn't it be more valuable to look at the OI change over the past week, month, or 3 months? Of course it would, the picture is so much clearer as to what traders are doing over a longer time frame. One thing will always remain constant in trading. As new information comes in, traders will adjust their views. As they adjust their views, they will adjust their positions. Leviathan's VOI helps you follow these position adjustments over longer time frames and also keep up as to where the weak hands of the crowd lie.

Ranking has some of the same characteristics as Skew, but is entirely its own animal. Whereas skew shows a representative smooth line of Volatilities across a delta or strike range, Ranking digs deep into the specifics of the implied volatilities. Ranking breaks options into delta buckets, which looks back historically at the Call/Put compared to At-the-money vol. Then the Ranking page displays the results in percentile form, showing which expiries are Rich (higher percentile) or Cheap (lower percentile) over your predefined time frame



What is Ranking Page?

Ranking is a deeper dive into skew. There are times when it is not clear whether options are truly cheap or rich by just looking at skew curves. Skew curves change shape or just slide along a defined volatility path which takes away the clarity of value. Sometimes it is better to evaluate option premiums by comparing that option to itself over time. Ranking takes a delta bucket view of entire underlying futures/stocks. For example, if a trader is looking at downside in XYZ, ranking will help that trader see which expiry has the cheapest/richest 10%/25%/35%/50% puts and calls over the time frame selected. Applying a percentile ranking is very important because an option may not be cheap just because it is the cheapest on the list. If the cheapest expiry of a 25 delta put is in the 80th percentile, that means all puts are expensive over the time frame selected. This is a tool that even the most novice traders can understand and the most professional traders can appreciate.

How does knowing the Ranking help a trader?

A big problem for option traders is selecting the best option/structure to represent your viewpoint. Which Call/Put to buy in XYZ if you are bullish/bearish? Should you put on an outright option or do a structure such as a vertical spread, butterfly, or condor? Leviathans Ranking Tool will identify the percentile ranking for ease of use. If you see all puts are in the 80th percentile or higher and are bearish, it may be better to buy a vertical Put spread rather than an outright Put. This takes the sting out of buying a rich option as another rich option is sold against it. Over time, mean reversion in Volatility and Skew will happen. Using Leviathan’s Ranking Tool will help the trader make informed decisions regarding which options to select in order to take advantage of positive or negative mean reversion by know which options are rich or cheap.

What is straddle?

Volatility is simply the amount the stock price fluctuates, without regard for direction. As an individual trader, you really only need to concern yourself with two forms of volatility: historical volatility and implied volatility. Implied volatility is a dynamic figure that changes based on activity in the options marketplace. Usually, when implied volatility increases, the price of options will increase as well, assuming all other things remain constant. So when implied volatility increases after a trade has been placed, it's good for the option owner and bad for the option seller. This information is necessary when evaluating trades and it can be difficult to keep an eye on multiple option markets simultaneously. This is one of the many things Leviathan can do for you.
